Tamarind Springs: A Jungle Dining Experience

Published by sandy under Uncategorized

by: Sophia

Located within the slopes and greenery in Ampang, Tamarind Springs provides a unique dining experience that can’t be found anywhere else in Klang Valley . Its beauty comes with a purpose and that is to provide diners with a natural setting to go with their meal. Tamarind Springs has gained popularity because of its beautiful location and its Indochinese cuisine is well known all across town. It is a relatively long drive deep into the edge of the city where there is still some semblance of nature left. The area remains untouched and for a moment, it does feel as if you’ve been transported deep into the jungles of a foreign land.

The atmosphere at Tamarind Springs can only be described as exquisite. It retains most of its natural surroundings. With only a narrow walkway leading up to the beautifully crafted restaurants on stilts, it is surrounded by everything that’s green and natural. The interior can be described as traditional with a hint of modern elements. Fashioned with traditional Indochinese decorations, the restaurant exudes a ambience that is pure and calm. If you’re lucky (or some might take it as misfortune), you might be able to spot some wildlife innocently and quietly spying on you while you dine. They are harmless so you can just dismiss them as part of the backdrop along with the sounds and scents of nature.

The items on the menu might be a tad alarming at first but if you put aside your fear for all things new, you will be pleasantly delighted. The extensive menu boasts a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian cuisine. Not something you’d normally find at the road side stalls around town or the multitude of restaurants that pop up like pimples. It is in a class of its own, unique and absolutely delicious.

To get a taste of what Tamarind Springs is all about we suggest ordering Eric Leong’s Favourite Pick which is a dish created in honour of the man himself. It features 4 different types of starters, all unique in its own right. The Salmon parcel with Asian Pesto. It is bursting with salmon aroma and taste and the Asian Pesto gives it its full flavour. The Shrimp Mousse on Baguette is basically a fried prawn cake that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The baked mussel in coconut sauce was a delight as it was fresh and retained its natural juices. Finally, the minced prawns on rice crackers has its own unique taste with a very prominent peanut, caramel and honey topping. Might be an acquired taste to some but if you’re up for a challenge you might find it charming.

The most striking dish at Tamarind Springs would be the Laotian Seafood Watermelon Soup. Yes, you read it right

Sao Nam Vietnamese Restaurant

Published by sandy under Uncategorized

by: Sophia

It’s not often that you find a Vietnamese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur that is worthy of mention. Sao Nam is one of the notable ones that deserve mountains of praise. Snugly located along Tengkat Tong Shin (walking distance from Bintang Walk), it can be easily missed because of its small signage. Nevertheless, we suggest that you look long and hard if you want to experience Sao Nam ’s authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Tengkat Tong Shin houses rows of impressive heritage structures that have been around since the colonial times. The exterior still exudes a bit of history but to keep up with the times, the street has been modernized and turned into an entertainment area. Sao Nam retains most of its original structure. The interior is modern chic with some traditional elements especially with a charming wooden staircase that just looks as if it’s been there for a hundred years. Vibrant colours of yellow and brown are used with revolutionary posters and a bright logo of the rising sun on the walls. The atmosphere is one that is relaxed and casual and it’s more caf

Sandias: The Watermelon

Published by sandy under Uncategorized

by: Sophia

Sandias literally translates to Watermelon but it’s not fruits that they serve, its Mexican at its best. The watermelon slice represents the 3 colours of the Mexican flag as well as a happy smile. This quaint restaurant is located at Plaza Damansara in Damansara Heights. Not exactly prime meat in real estate but there’s ample parking and you won’t be stuck in a jam on your way to dinner. Sandias doesn’t have a very extensive menu but the listed items sound mouth watering and tastes absolutely phenomenal.

Sandias is a combination of elegance and ease. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by the bright colours that make up their walls. The yellow and blue is particularly striking but it gives the restaurant a modern and somewhat artsy feel. The long wood panels that make up the floor and the whites amidst the bright colours is particularly soothing to the eyes and adds a homely feel to Sandias. The interior itself is truly a work of art and the food is a reflection of that.

If there’s one thing Mexican’s are famous for, it’s their vibrant delights in both taste and colour. The
Ceviche (RM22) is one of those dishes that mixes a plethora of ingredients and it is light and refreshing. Small cubes of Dory fish are marinated in lime juice. If you’re not a fan of lime then you should stay away from this dish as it is bursting with lime flavour. It is served with tomato, onion, cilantro, green olive salsa and a touch of chili. With so many different flavours in one mouthful it’s hard to keep track of what is what. The Albondigas (RM18) is also an excellent dish to start off with but its not for the light hearted. This beef and vegetable meatball is served in a mild tomato sauce flavoured with spearmint, oregano and chipotle chili. The chili is an absolute treat if you’re a fan of spicy food. If not, request for the chili to be left out and you’ll get juicy and tender meat balls that almost mel ts in your mouth.

The mains don’t sound as attractive as the starters but its definitely worth a try. The Barbacoa e Cordero (RM38) is a chunk of lamb that is marinated in Sandias’ very own

Qba is a restaurant, wine and cigar bar which is located within Westin Hotel on Jalan Bukit Bintang. With its brilliant setting and its delicious Latin American cuisine, Qba is set to take Kuala Lumpur by storm. It is a Latin grill and bar in every sense of the word.

The restaurant was designed by Singapore based designer, Ed Poole. It is an absolute work of art. Everything is intricately crafted and beautifully decorated in authentic Latin American fashion. Iron cast balustrades, elaborately painted frescoes, wooden panels, chandeliers, blood red curtains and a carved statue of an angel fill up the large space that houses Qba. Just sitting in there makes you feel as if you
